We learned about veggie glop from “Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for You and Your Dog” by Carina Beth MacDonald. This mixture is rich in nutrients that your dog needs but can’t get from meat alone.
The ingredients can vary from batch to batch, depending on what you have handy. A typical example of the basics are:
- Mostly greens: romaine lettuce, spinach, broccoli, etc.
- Some fruits: half an apple, blueberries, strawberries, banana
- An egg (shell included)
- Two cloves garlic
- Four or so chicken livers
- Two heaping spoonfuls of yogurt
- Apple cider vinegar – a healthy splash
- Molasses – a healthy splash
We often add or substitute – for example the leafy part of celery, a pear instead of an apple, beef heart instead of chicken livers. I love adding bean sprouts, too.
Run that all through the food processor, and that’s it! When you serve the glop, add:
- 3-5 tablespoons oil – we usually use salmon or flaxseed oil
We use organic produce, so we don’t even wash the food. We usually whip up 2 or 3 cups of glop a couple of times a week. Serve half fresh and refrigerate half for the next day.
Veggie glop doesn’t cost much because dogs don’t mind wilted lettuce or mushy apples. Put the produce that would otherwise go to waste into the dog food! Also, maybe you can develop a relationship with the local grocer, as we did. Our grocer gives us past-its-prime produce for free.
