“Castaways of the Flying Dutchman” by Brian Jacques

Review by Pam Marr Rybinski

Many adults and young adults are familiar with the popular REDWALL series by New York Times Best Selling Author, Brian Jacques. This 2001 young person’s treasure is an imaginative addition to the seafaring legend of The Flying Dutchman. Like the “Redwall” adventures, it is a well-written classic tale of good vs. evil, featuring a mute teenage boy who befriends a starving black lab. They become “forever” friends, battling the forces of evil for survival, and for the benefit of people in need. Neb is “a very special boy” and his rescue dog, Denmark, is a very special dog. Caution: this book is not for children who’ve been taught that there is no evil in the world; this tale is more like the fairy tales of old . . . bad things happen; with the help of friends, determined people prevail.
