K-9 Overcoat

English Pointer

As the holiday season sets in, so does the cold, wind and snow. Luckily, we have discovered a high-quality line of outdoor dog gear that we really like – Ruffwear.

I found this product line last year when we adopted Rio. We needed a dog coat to keep this southern-born short-haired dog warm! As Fall set in, we had just discovered that early morning “training walks” made a huge positive difference in Rio’s behavior. But this meant we were out approx. 6-7 AM during the fall/winter – fair or foul weather – BRR!

Hanging with a fisherman for 20 years, I learned long ago that you can dress to be comfortable in any weather. I sought to apply this wisdom to my dog’s attire. I first tried Sage’s coat on Rio. He did NOT like the velcro. I hardly wanted to traumatize him, so I searched for a different option…

After some Internet research, I found Ruffwear has a few coat styles. I ordered two. I immediately picked the K-9 Overcoat and returned the other, for reasons quite specific to Rio:

  • The K-9 Overcoat is adjustable and has buckles (no zippers, no velcro).
  • The other one was more form-fitted, which could have been great. However, the coat was tight around his front and loose around his back. Who knows, this could be the perfect fit for your dog, just not Rio.
  • The other one had a zipper. Our sensitive Rio didn’t like the zipper much better than velcro.

The K-9 Overcoat is reflective.

In addition to the K-9 Overcoat meeting our key criteria, it has additional benefits:

  • The outside layer is weather resistant.
  • The outside layer is reflective.
  • The inside layer is very soft and warm.

Six (6) size options, from XXS to XL, range from a 13″ girth (around rib cage), all the way up to a 42″ girth. Rio wears Size S.

Ruffwear’s products have cool, sporty designs, too. We are quite happy to show off our cold-weather look!
